You might want to look at a sample semester course schedule to help you plan what you will take when.  You can see an example of how it might work on this website. There is a link to an Excel spreadsheet sample and one for first year students as well. 

In most cases, you'll be encouraged to take 5 courses per semester to stay on track to graduate, but course load will depend on program of study and individual circumstances. Stay in close contact with your advisor to plan for the transition
